The idea for this free crochet hanging basket pattern came from me wanting a new way to carry and store my clothes pins.

I created one large enough (the purple color) to be able to slip my hand in and out without a struggle. This pattern can also be made as big or small as you’d like by simply adding or reducing rows.

Materials:

  • 5 mm crochet hook
  • Yarn needle
  • Yarn (used red heart, 4 medium, spring green)
  • Scissors

Abbreviations:

MR- Magic ring

SC- single crochet

ESC- extended single crochet

CH- Chain

Pattern

Start with a MR

Row 1: SC x2, CH 2, SC x2 in the MR and pull closed. CH 2 and turn. (pic 1)

Row 2: ESC in each SC, in CH space (ESC 1, CH 2, ESC 1) ESC in each SC to the end. CH2 and turn.

(pic 2 is 4 rows in)

Repeat row 2 for 21 more rows (for the size of the green which is 5.5″ wide, and 11.5″ tall to top of loop)

The purple hanging basket is 30 rows total. (7″ wide, 15.5″ tall to top of the loop)

Once your triangle is at the right size for the size of bag you’ve chosen, finish off leaving a long tail for sewing the basket together. Weave in the end from your MR now.

Assembly

Fold your triangle in thirds creating the basket shape. (Have your tail yarn on your left) (pic 3 and 4)

Once your shape is where you want it, sew along the bottom edge using the running stitch making sure to get through all layers. (I went over the edge twice going across and back over.)

After you’ve sewn across the edge, go through the middle using the running stitch again, closing the middle of the basket. (be sure not to sew it all the way through the back.) (pic 5)

Once you reach the top of the middle front, loop over a couple times to create an extra bit of sturdiness there. (pic 6)

Top loop

Take your yarn and connect in your last CH 2 space. SC 1 and CH 10, SC 1 back into CH 2 space. CH 1 turn, SC across CH, slip stitching to last stitch. (pic 7)

Finish off, wrapping the yarn around the loop a few times to create a tassel like look and weave in ends. (pic 8)
