The inspiration for this free crochet cowl pattern came from watching my daughter with a regular scarf last winter. I wanted to make it easier for her to put on and wear a scarf at school and when playing outside.
So I decided to make her a cowl! This pattern creates a scarf that children and adults can wear.
Once you start making your cowl, if you decide it needs to be bigger or smaller, you can change the size by easily by having any even number of starting chains.
Finished size:
Your finished cowl will be 31″ x 8″
Materials:
- Weight 4 yarn (a small skein of about 258 yards works great!)
- Hook size 4mm
- 3 buttons (I used 1″)
- Yarn needle
Abbreviations:
SC- single crochet
CH- chain
Free Pattern
Start with a chaining 162
Row 1: Starting in the fourth chain from your hook, work a SC, then *CH 1, skip one CH, SC in the next* Repeat ** across, you will end with a SC in the last CH. CH 2 and turn.
**Note: In this pattern you will be working into the chain spaces.
Row 2: SC 1 in the first CH space, *CH 1, skip the SC and SC in the CH 1 space* Repeat ** across the row. You will end with a SC in the CH space at the end. Ch 2 and turn.
Repeat row 2 for 7 more rows.
Row 9: SC in first CH space, Ch 1 and SC in next CH space, CH 3 (this makes your button hole), skip the next CH 1 space and SC in the next CH 1 space. *CH 1, SC in next CH space* Repeat ** across ending with a SC in CH 2 space. CH 2 and turn.
Row 10: Continue working pattern as normal, when you get to the CH 3 space CH 1 from your last SC, then SC into the fist CH, CH 1, SC into last CH, CH 1 and finish row as normal. CH 2 and turn.
Row 11-18: Repeat row 2 again, for the next 8 rows
Row 19-20: Repeat rows 9 and 10 again, to create the second button hole.
Row 21-28: Repeat row 2, for the next 8 rows.
Row 29-30: Repeat rows 9 and 10 to create the third and last button hole.
Row 31-38: Repeat row 2 for the last 8 rows.
Once you finish your last row, do not CH 2, work another 2 SC in the last stitch and start working SC’s around the sides of your cowl making the finishing border. SC 3 in each corner.
Finish off and weave in your ends.
Sew on the buttons
Now it’s time to sew on the buttons holes. You will be folding the piece (pictured) to help you see where you need to sew the button holes.
Have your cowl laid down with the button holes on your left side. Make sure you have the side that you want facing out, facing down.
Take the right side and fold is diagonally down to the left.
Now take the left side with button holes, and fold it over so the shorter side is lined up with the longer side.
This is where you buttons need to be sewn on. You can use your button holes as a guide or count rows to place buttons between rows 9-10, 19-20, and 29-30 about 1 1/4 in. from the edge.
After your buttons are sew on, you’re all down with your crochet cowl!
