Learn how to make homemade sponges with this easy diy tutorial!
Why not make your own sponges? You can use materials that you already have from your home that make these sponges more cost-effective.
In this post I’ll walk you through the steps you can do to make these homemade sponges. They’re easy to make, reusable and great for many of your household tasks.
You can make these sponges out of fabric or old towels in less than 30 minutes!
Making your own sponges
Materials:
- Choice of fabric (1/4 yard)
- Mesh or tulle fabric (1/4 yard)
- Cotton batting or stuffing (optional: adds thickness to sponge)
- Sewing Machine (but also could be hand sewn!)
- Thread of choice to go with fabric
- Sewing pins/clips
- Scissors or rotary cutter
- Cutting mat and ruler (measuring tape or ruler)
- Marking pen if needed
Instructions:
Cut (2) pieces of fabric 5″ x 6″ and 1-2 pieces (same size) of your mesh fabric. (1 piece of mesh will be a light scrub and 2 will make a little bit of a tougher scrub, or you can put a piece of mesh on each side or your sponge.)
If using batting, cut 1-2 pieces, depending on how thick you want your sponge, 5″ x 6″.
Lay your pieces right sides together, so the sometimes ugly side, is facing you with your mesh piece(s) in the middle.
If using batting, lay that on top of your pieces. Pin or clip your pieces together as desired.
Using a 1/4″ seem allowance, sew all layers of your sponge together, turning at the corners, and leaving a 1-2″ gap for turning it right side out.
Clip the corners being careful not to clip the stitches, to remove some bulk.
Turn your sponge right side out, between the mesh layer. Push out the corners.
If you chose to use stuffing instead of batting, now is the time to add that. You don’t need too much otherwise it’ll be too tough to sew through.
(It is optional, especially when using a towel material, to add batting or stuffing. Batting and stuffing just add some shape to your sponge.)
Once you have your sponge how you’d like, grab some needle and thread and use the ladder (or invisible stitch) to close the hole.
If you don’t know how to do the invisible stitch, here is a great video tutorial.
Once you have your hole closed, go ahead and sew around the inside of your sponge. You can choose how big or small you’d like to sew into your sponge.
(These next photos show two sponges. One with stuffing and one without.)
Both sponges work great for so many of your household cleaning tasks. Once you’re done, trim up any loose string and your sponges are ready to use!
When you’re done using you sponges, give them a good rinse and wringing out after each use.
To clean your sponges, you can wash them like any other towel, and also regularly soak them in a water and vinegar solution to help remove bacteria.
