Simple homemaking is perfect for beginners. Here we’ll cover who is a homemaker, what is homemaking, and how to make is simple for beginners.
What is homemaking
If you look up the definition of homemaking, you’ll find something like this:
homeĀ·makĀ·ing
Homemaking is an art form. The art of creating a house into a home and creating that home into a place that is beautifully catered towards nurturing your family.
We all live in a home of some sort and we do everything there. Eat, sleep, play and create messes along the way. Some of us are full time homemakers and some of us have jobs outside of the home.
I want you to notice that in the definition that it did not state that a homemaker stays home. It is the management of the home so even if you work outside of your home, you can still consider yourself a homemaker.
Who is a homemaker
A homemaker is the person that creates a house into a home. Cleaning, cooking, organizing, decorating, and so much more. The person who makes the home look, feel, and smell like the warm and welcoming place you want to be.
But sometimes the task of a homemaker can feel overwhelming. Like everything is never ending and always piling up. This is why we are going to keep it simple.
Getting Started
Were you taught how to keep a home growing up? If you were, great! If you’re like me, maybe not so much.
As a beginner it can hard to know where to start in your homemaker journey. When I first moved in with my husband, I did not have a clue how to be a wife, or how to cook more than a handful of meals. I believe if someone like me can learn how to be a homemaker over time, you can to!
Create a Vision
How do you want your home to look? How do you want it to feel? Having a vision for your home will help you set goals, and find a plan to get there.
Take time to think about this. It’s a big deal. Keep it simple. Brain dump on a piece paper, or create something like a Pinterest board.
Also an important thing, don’t get your expectations too high. Homemaking is a skill that can take time to learn like any other skill. For some, it’ll come naturally. Others, like me (I’m still learning), it takes time and a lot of effort and planning.
Creating Routines
Once you have your vision, now it’s time to plan routines to help you get there.
Your routines will be unique to you. What works for your friends, might not work for you. And that’s okay! Your home will be what you make it into.
A routine should be a simple daily schedule that is able to be followed loosely. As a homemaker, there can be a lot to managed.
- Cleaning
- Meal Planning
- Grocery Shopping
- Budgeting
- Scheduling (for yourself or family activities)
- Pets
- And more!
I find that if I have a routine or schedule in place, it’s easier to follow and stick to. Honestly, I hated the idea of following a weekly cleaning routine. I should just do it all when I see it right? Wrong!
Creating a routine to follow will help you stay on top of tasks that might go neglected otherwise. Each day do a certain area of the house like kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, etc..
Now just because one day is meant for the kitchen, does not mean there won’t be a mess in other areas of the house that needs tending to. It just means on kitchen day, that day your soul focus is a complete clean of the kitchen, and just simple tidying in other rooms.
You can have daily, weekly, and monthly routines to follow. Take a look around your home, write down what you do daily, weekly, and things that could be done closer to monthly. Then make your routines out of those things.
Again, you can and should follow these routines/schedules loosely. Life happens and days don’t always go as planned. Go with flow and again, keep it simple.
Meal Planning
This is something I find that you either do or don’t do. I am not much for planning meals and it’s something I actually need to do. I find myself most days and nights scrambling to figure out what’s for dinner because it got shoved to the back of my mind and I forgot about it.
Meal planning actually helps with more than the “what’s for dinner?” question. It helps you write your grocery list. Need tortillas for taco Tuesday? Put it on the list. Need lettuce for BLT’s? Put it on the list.
I believe implementing meal planning can drastically simplify that part of your day. It’s already planned out so you can worry about other things during your day. As part of simple homemaking for beginners, I highly recommend starting meal planning.

Simple Cooking
Now that we’ve covered meal planning, there’s cooking.
Don’t make it complicated. I really had no idea how to cook when I first moved in with my husband. Thankfully he was quite encouraging. “You won’t learn if you don’t do it. You’re going to mess up and that’s how you learn.”
Cooking meals for your family can be a big task. Don’t let it overwhelm you, leftovers are a good thing, and keep it simple, try new things, and learn along the way.
You
As the homemaker, we get so ingulfed in the tasks of the home and our family its easy to forget an important one. You.
Being a homemaker can be challenging sometimes and it’s important that you, the homemaker, keep your sanity (the best we can at least) during those challenging times.
Find the little things that help you be you. Getting up early before everyone for some quiet, or taking that quiet later in the evening. Taking a bath, going for walks, whatever it is you do to recharge, take time to do that when you need to.
Begin homemaking!
Now all that’s left is for you to start your simple journey into homemaking as beginner!
Remember, homemaking is a journey. You will learn things that work and things that don’t. Keep it simple. As a beginner, that will be your key to success. When things don’t work, pivot and try something else.
You got this! Now let’s get to simple homemaking for beginners!
