The weather is getting warmer and now were getting the urge to open the windows and air out the house! Welcoming in the part of the year when all things become fresh again and we start thinking about how to start spring cleaning our homes.

How to start spring cleaning

Spring cleaning is when you basically do a deep clean and purge of every room in your home.

It’s all about getting to those places that are either missed or don’t need to be cleaned as much.

How long?

How long should it take you to spring clean your home? Well it depends on you and how big your home is.

If you work outside of the home full or part time, it might take you longer spreading it out across a few days or weeks, or you’ll aim to get it done as quickly as possible like in a weekend.

For someone who stays home, they can decide if they want it done quickly, or to take their time spreading out how long they want to take to get it done.

For me, it’ll take me anywhere from 5-7 days to do a complete spring cleaning of the whole house. I commit one day to a room and clean it top to bottom.

When to start

Traditionally spring cleaning begins in the month of April and maybe even late March depending on when the weather begins to warm and one can open the windows.

First pick a day or week when you know you’ll be home and have nothing on the schedule that’ll stop you.

You can schedule what day you want to clean each room and/or which room you want to start with on a certain day. Either way with this done you have one less decisions to make in how to start spring cleaning your home.

What do you need

Before beginning any cleaning, make sure you have everything you need.

Scrubbers and towels

Cleaning products

Dusters

Vacuums and mops

Spray bottles

Tips for Spring Cleaning

Clean rooms from top to bottom. When doing things like dusting and wiping off surfaces, this usually puts debris in the air and on the floor. You wouldn’t want to clean the floor first just to fill it back up with everything else coming off of all the other surfaces in a room.

Clear the clutter, then clean. A lot of people tend to declutter and clean at the same time. This makes sense but also takes a lot of time. Declutter everything you can out of the room first. Then it’ll make cleaning the room an easier task.

Clean the toughest room first. When you tackle the toughest room in the house first, it’ll make the other rooms seem so much easier. Saving the toughest room for last might have you running out of steam and motivation to get it done.

Have a plan

This might be one of the most important tips I have for you.

Have all your cleaning supplies ready to go.

Do a walk through of each room and note anything you see that needs to be done or gotten rid of. It’s also helpful to have a cleaning list already made out of things to clean that are normally skipped over (or maybe you’ve been eyeing it for a while but it just hasn’t gotten done).

Know what you’re going to do with unwanted items. Donate, sell, or throw away. If you plan to donate or sell, where are you going to store these items until you can get rid of them?

Have fun

Try to have fun spring cleaning. I know it can feel like a massive, overwhelming job sometimes and not everyone enjoys cleaning.

Take the time to rearrange and maybe a new paint color.

Take breaks and eat meals when needed.

I know cleaning isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but if you can find a way to enjoy, it’ll make it go that much faster!

Cleaning List

  • Clean the ceiling and walls
  • Dust crown molding and baseboards
  • Dust ceiling fans
  • Wipe off light switch and outlet covers
  • Shampoo any carpets and area rugs
  • Clean furniture
  • Dust radiators
  • Wash any curtains
  • Wash windows
  • Vacuum refrigerator coils
  • Wipe out fridge and freezer
  • Clean out cosmetics
  • Clean out closets (reorganize and rid any unwanted items)
  • Move and clean under washer and dryer
  • Launder and clean any heavy winter items
  • Sweep and clean floors
  • Wipe off back of television and speakers
  • Wipe off cabinets (including the top!)
  • Clean shower curtains

And there’s probably more depending on your home! Things in my home you might not have in yours is our cast iron stove. That would need to be cleaned and reoiled. Also our wood burner would need to cleaned and shut up for the summer.

How to start spring cleaning doesn’t have to be hard. Take one room at a time and you’ll be done spring cleaning before you know it!
