Learning how to be a homemaker, can be an overwhelming and dauting task. The good news is it doesn’t have to stay that way. We can work through that overwhelm one day, week and month at a time.
I have come up with a few habits to help you learn how to grow into the homemaker you are made to be. I use these habits each and everyday.
Everyday is not going to go perfect, but each day brings new opportunities to try again.
Have a Vision
Homemaking is by definition, the creation and management of a home, especially as a pleasant place in which to live.
What does home feel like to you?
What does it smell like?
How do you want people to feel when they come into your home?
Having a vision for how you want to keep your home, will help you on learning how to be the homemaker for your home.
Without your vision, you’re kind of just aiming to keep a clean home. (Which is a big part of homemaking, BUT not all of it)
Take the time to spark ideas in how you want your home to feel. And the good news is you can always change your mind! Try something and change it up until you find the right feeling for you and your family.
Embrace the Mundane
Sometimes the days can blur together and feel as if you’re doing the same thing over and over. This can get boring and sometimes discouraging. Here is where you lean in and embrace it.
Change the tune from “I have to” to “I get to”. When you’re able to learn to find the gratitude in the everyday things that happen over and over again, it changes the tune of the task or chore at hand, into a more positive one.
“I get to clean the dishes because I have a family to feed.”
“I get to pick up the dirty laundry off the floor because we have clothes to wear.”
And I have also added in a little prayer towards whosever stuff it is that I am cleaning/picking up. One day my son spilt a large quantity of milk or juice multiple times in the same day. I was frustrated that I was cleaning up yet another spill for the “millionth” time that day.
I took a deep breathe and thanked God for having those messes to clean up.
Do the Work
If you’re a homemaker who is home most of the time, it can be easy to “do the work later” and then sometimes it doesn’t get it done.
Pick a time everyday that you will do whatever it is you have planned to get done. Whether that’s a daily cleaning, errands, food prep, or some other form of work in the home. Pick a time, stick to it and do whatever you can in that time.
Even if you don’t get everything done, it’ll feel better to have something done rather than nothing.
Homemaking is a serious job. It’s one that can be overlooked so easily. Our homes are busy places, works in progress where there is always something needing attention and always more to be done.
As a homemaker you do almost everything so you must be disciplined in getting things done, even when you don’t feel like it.
Get Dressed
Right after you get up in the morning, get dressed. Putting clothes and possibly a small amount of makeup (your preference), like you’re going somewhere can help you get into the motion of going to get things done.
I know some people like to even put shoes on as a complete “get ready for the day”. I don’t wear shoes around my house mostly because of carpet, but I can see how this is also helpful!
The point is though, if you’re dressed, you’re less likely to lounge around most of the day. There sure are days for lounging around but most of the time, I’d recommend putting something on that makes you feel productive.
Chose the right attitude
The job of the homemaker is caring for the family and home.
Focus on the positive as much as you can. You, as the homemaker can do so much to make your home a peaceful and welcoming atmosphere.
If were always complaining, it’s going to affect not only us, but those around us too.
Now we all can have down days (and if you suffer from something deeper like depression, things don’t always feel good, and sometimes it’s needful to ask for help), and that’s okay! It’s a part of life. We just do our best to shake it off, and keep moving.
Difficult times do arise (and they will), but try to bring the focus to things that will bring your family up.
A homemaker who radiates warm, loving, and gratitude will be one of the most successful homemakers of all.
Learning how to be a homemaker doesn’t have to be hard. We just have to start right where we are. Find the vision of the home you want to create, and work on getting there one day at a time.
Things don’t happen overnight like we’d like sometimes. So keep it simple, and take your time. Try new things and change it up if something isn’t working anymore.
And enjoy the process of learning how to be a homemaker for you and your family!
