Here comes fall again and all I can think about is those gorgeous fall decorations! This crochet farmhouse pumpkins pattern is a great addition to those decorations.
This pattern uses the back humps of your foundation chain, and a half double crochet slip stitch (hdcss) worked back and forth in both loops and front loops only to create a beautiful ridged texture for your crochet farmhouse pumpkin.
In this pattern there are two sizes, small and medium.
Materials for Farmhouse Pumpkins:
- Yarn, weight 4 (color of your choice)
- Hook size 5mm
- Yarn needle
- Choice of medium for stem (I used a stick trimmed to size)
- Poly-Fil of your choice
Abbreviations
CH- chain
HDCSS- half double crochet slip stitch (yarn over, insert hook into stitch, yarn over and pull through stitch, continue to pull through remaining loops on hook)
FLO- front loop only
FO- finish off
Choose which size you’d like to make
The small pumpkin when finished is roughly 3″ tall, and 5″ in width. (Size will vary depending on how much or little you stuff your pumpkin.)
The medium sized pumpkin finished in roughly 4″ tall, and 6″ in width. (Size will vary depending on how much or little you stuff your pumpkin.)
Free Pattern
Chain 27 (for small 7″ long) and 33 (for medium 8″ long). Leave a longer starting tail.
Row 1: Using the back humps (sk the 1st) work hdcss across, CH 1 and turn
If you’re unsure of what the back humps of your chain are, see photos below. The top photo shows your work as you would normally see it. Turn your chain around to see the back. This is where you’ll see the back humps pointed out by the red arrows. This is the loop you are working in across the chain.
Row 2: Work hdcss in FLO across, CH 1 and turn
Row 3: Work hdcss through both loops across, CH 1 and turn
Repeat rows 2 and 3, (22 sm), (27 med) more times OR until your piece measures (10.5″ sm), (12.5″ med.)

Invisible Join
Working with the wrong side of your piece facing you, place your starting side and ending side together.
You will work through both loops on your ending row, and the FLO of the starting row and then back through the same loops of the ending row. Repeat across to the end.
Turn your work so the right side is out now. Your seams should be almost perfectly invisible!
Now it’s time to close one end of your pumpkin. Both of your tails are at the same end now, this is okay!
Take the tail from the starting of your pumpkin, and close the bottom by weaving around your piece, then pulling it tightly and securing it closed.
Now that one end of your pumpkin is closed, it is time to stuff it. Keep your remaining tail in the middle of the stuffing the best you can. This helps getting a nice close to the top of your pumpkin and keep it from being overly lopsided.
You don’t want to stuff your pumpkin too full so your able to change the shape without needing an excess amount of tension on your yarn.
With your pumpkin stuffed to your liking, weave around the edge like you did the other side, pulling tight to close. If your close has a small opening this is just fine and actually quite perfect for adding your choice of material for your pumpkin stem.
Next push your yarn needle through the middle of your pumpkin and come out through the middle of the bottom. Pulling the yarn through tightly so the top of your pumpkin dips in.
Now take your yarn and wrap it around the outside and pushing it back through the middle, from top to bottom. Pull your yarn tight again to make a deeper ridge around the outside. Repeat this 3-4 more times to your liking. Secure your yarn and weave in tail.
Add your stem material of choice. I used a stick, trimmed down to the size of my liking.
